The cornerstone of the resurrected World Trade Center having just been laid, I'm reminded of one of the most meaningful shrines to the victims of 9/11 I've seen. The project is called Lightpoles and is the work of street artist Dan Witz. Mr. Witz has painted photorealistic lamps on street light poles across lower Manhattan as a tribute, and they are beautifully eloquent reminders of the broad devastation wrought that day.

In other cornerstone news, there has been much praise of the selection of the typeface Gotham for the engraving of the stone. Gotham is a recent typeface designed by New Yorker Tobias Frere-Jones, and it seems to offer precisely the right compromise between timelessness and an expression of Manhattan's unique genius loci, or spirit of the place.
